Ugly Elklings in Sybille Canyon
Heading into the canyon from a trip to
Sybille Canyon RV Storage and Vineyard (check out their brand new website!) this week, I saw all the elk out at Game and Fish, and three big horns too. They were clearly waiting for something...er, someone. Matt. They were waiting for Matt to come by with their breakfast.
Man, those elk look shaggy this time of year, but what great racks! I stopped and played papparazzo because the light was phenom and the animals were just...so...there. One of the elk, an especially shaggy one, posed under the "Wyoming Wildlife" sign and let me take a buncha pics.
Matt appeared, distributed the oatmeal (not really oatmeal, but it was breakfast time) and I was able to get some excellent shots of all. Matt apologized for his scraggly pals...said that in a few weeks they'd be all sleek and shiny. Did you know they drop those gigantic horns every year? Yeah, you probably did...well I didn't. Most of the elk you see out there by Hwy. 34 are two year olds Matt told me. The big one is six years old I think he said, and the oldest around the place is 26...or 23...I forget, but he's been around a good long time!
